The Athletics have set up a locker for free agent infielder Luis Urías, signaling his presence at spring training, A’s beat writer Martín Gallegos reported on February 17.

The Athletics have yet to officially announce Urías’ signing on their transaction log and will need to make corresponding roster moves to place him on the active or 40-man roster.
The Athletics recently extended manager Mark Kotsay’s contract through the 2028 season, with a club option for 2029.

In their final season at the Oakland Coliseum in 2024, the Athletics finished fourth in the AL West with a 63-93 record, trailing the division-winning Houston Astros (88-73) by 19.5 games.
The Athletics played its final home game at the Coliseum on September 26, defeating the Texas Rangers 3-2 in front of 46,889 fans before their relocation to Sacramento for the 2025 season.
Urías’ Career From Mexico to the Majors
Urías, 27, was born in Magdalena de Kino, Mexico, and has played seven seasons in Major League Baseball. He debuted with the San Diego Padres and played two seasons from 2018-20129, before spending four seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers from 2020-23. On August 1, 2023, Milwaukee traded him to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for right-hander Bradley Blalock.
That offseason, on November 17, 2023, Boston traded Urías to the Seattle Mariners for right-handed pitcher Isaiah Campbell.
He elected free agency on October 31, 2024, after one season in Seattle.
In 2024, Urías split his time between Triple-A Tacoma and the Mariners.
Urías appeared in 41 games for Seattle in 2024, batting .192 across 109 plate appearances with 18 hits, seven doubles, four home runs, 16 RBI, nine walks, and 34 strikeouts.
Defensively, he played 38 games at second base, starting 29. Over 249.1 innings, he recorded 84 chances, 27 putouts, 51 assists, six errors, and seven double plays, finishing with a .928 fielding percentage. He also made three starts at shortstop, logging 28.1 innings with nine chances, four putouts, five assists, and one double play.
Seattle optioned Urías to Triple-A Tacoma on May 24, 2024, before outrighting him on June 4.
In Tacoma, he played 77 games and hit .260 with a .791 OPS across 350 plate appearances, collecting 75 hits, 12 doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, 56 RBI, eight stolen bases, 48 walks, and 57 strikeouts.
Defensively, Urías started 69 games at third base, playing 596.1 innings with 190 chances, 48 putouts, 135 assists, seven errors, and 14 double plays, posting a .963 fielding percentage. He also started two games at second base, logging 18 innings with five chances, two putouts, and three assists.
During the 2023-24 Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacífico season, Urías played 24 games for the Yaquis de Obregón, batting .177 in 100 plate appearances with 15 hits, three doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, 12 walks, and 14 strikeouts.
During the 2023 regular season, Urías played 52 games between Boston and Milwaukee, hitting .194 across 175 plate appearances with 28 hits, six doubles, 18 RBI, 21 walks, and 41 strikeouts.
He also appeared in 29 games with Triple-A Nashville in Milwaukee’s system, batting .233 with 139 plate appearances, 27 hits, five doubles, four home runs, 16 RBI, 19 walks, and 34 strikeouts.
Urías was placed on Boston’s 10-day injured list on September 22, 2023, with a left calf strain.
On the international stage, Urías represented Mexico at the 2023 World Baseball Classic, helping the team reach the semifinals at loanDepot Park in Miami. Mexico fell 6-5 to No. 1 World ranked Japan after Munetaka Murakami’s walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth but went on to secure the bronze medal.
Urías played six games in the tournament, batting .278 with 18 at-bats, five hits, one home run, four RBI, two walks, and one strikeout while scoring twice.
Urías Looks to Secure Role With the Athletics
Across seven MLB seasons, Urías has appeared in 486 games, tallying 1,745 plate appearances while batting .232 with 349 hits, 68 doubles, four triples, 52 home runs, 196 RBI, nine stolen bases, 181 walks, 388 strikeouts, and a .717 OPS.
Urías will compete for an infield role during the 2025 Cactus League season, with the exception of first base. He’ll be vying for playing time alongside Zack Gelof, Max Schuemann, and Jacob Wilson under the watch of manager Mark Kotsay and the Athletics’ front office.
The Athletics open spring training on February 22 with a road matchup against the San Diego Padres at 3:10 p.m. EST at Peoria Sports Complex in Peoria, Ariz.
The Athletics begin the 2025 regular season on March 27 with a 7:10 p.m. EDT road game against the Seattle Mariners. Their home opener in Sacramento is set for March 31 against the Chicago Cubs at 10:05 p.m. EDT at Sutter Health Park, home of the San Francisco Giants’ Triple-A affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats.
