According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Milwaukee Brewers called up infielder Tyler Black, the top Canadian-born prospect on April 30. Black is the No. 4 overall prospect in their system and the No. 42 ranked prospect from MLBpipeline.com.
Black, 23, was born in Toronto, Canada. Milwaukee selected him as the 33rd overall pick in the 2021 MLB Amateur Draft and signed him on July 1, 2021, after his junior year at Wright State University, for a $2.2 million signing bonus contract.
He was selected as a MiLB.com Organization All-Star in 2022 and 2023.
The left-handed hitter made his professional debut on August 19, 2021, with the Arizona Complex League Brewers Blue team.
This season, Black played in 25 games with Triple-A Nashville and batted .303 in 117 plate appearances, ripping 30 hits, one double, three triples, five home runs, 18 RBI, three stolen bases, 13 walks, and 16 strikeouts before being promoted.
Black has started in 18 games at first base with Triple-A Nashville, playing through 149.2 innings with 125 chances, 108 putouts, 15 assists, two errors, turning 15 double plays, and a .984 fielding percentage. Black has also been in the lineup as a designated hitter in six games and once at third base.
During spring training, he played in 12 games with 38 plate appearances and hit .242, smacking eight hits, one RBI, three stolen bases, four walks, and nine strikeouts.
Last season, Black played 123 games between Double-A Biloxi and Triple-A Nashville. In both levels, he batted .284 with 557 plate appearances, recording 128 hits, 25 doubles, 12 triples, 18 home runs, 73 RBI, 55 stolen bases, 88 walks, 100 strikeouts, and a .930 OPS.
During his four seasons in the minors, Black has played in 238 games with 1,072 plate appearances, with a lifetime average of .281, racking up 244 hits, 43 doubles, 19 triples, 28 home runs, 134 RBI, 76 stolen bases, 172 walks, 191 strikeouts, and a .884 OPS.
