News about Bill Belichick, the former head coach of the New England Patriots and six-time Super Bowl winner, shocked the sporting world. The coaching legend is headed for Chapel Hill to be the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels football team.

Now that Belichick temporarily has the attention of sports, here are some moments he has crossed over into the baseball world.

In 2022, he visited his birthplace of Nashville and stopped by Hawkins Field, the home of the Vanderbilt Commodores. Belichick conversed with the Commodores’ head coach, Tim Corbin, prior to their matchup with the Florida Gators.

The biggest baseball connection Belichick has is with the Boston Red Sox. He did coach nearby in Foxboro, Mass., for the Patriots for 24 football seasons.

He is great friends with Red Sox manager Alex Cora. In 2021, after Boston beat the New York Yankees in an AL Wild Card game, Belichick sent a congratulatory text to Cora. Cora spoke about it and seemed excited about the text from his Boston-area coaching counterpart.

“That’s like the highlight of the year…I got the text from this random area code. That’s cool, to be honest with you, for somebody of his status to wish us luck.”

The two also met in 2018, when the Red Sox last won the World Series. Afterward, Belichick also sent a congratulatory message to the organization.

“First of all…big congratulations to Dave Dombrowski, Tony La Russa, Alex Cora, and the Red Sox for a great season, championship, and just a fabulous year…They set the bar awfully high…It was a good weekend in Boston.”
