The Tigres de Quintana Roo organization announced on April 6 that they signed Colombian right-handed pitcher Jeffry Nino for the 2024 Liga Mexicana de Beisbol regular season.
Nino, 27, was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, and has played five seasons in the minor leagues with the Cincinnati Reds organization from 2015-19, the Liga Profesional De Béisbol Colombia with the Tigres de Cartagena in 2021-22, the Vaqueros de Monteria in 2021-22, and Caimanes de Barranquilla in 2022-23, LIDOM with the Gigantes del Cibao in 2022-23, and Liga Mexicana de Béisbol with Guerreros de Oaxaca in 2022 and 2023, and the Diablos Rojos del México in 2022 and 2023.
Nino played last winter league season with Algodoneros de Guasave in Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico and appeared in one game out of the bullpen. He pitched .2 innings, allowing one hit, two earned runs, three walks, two strikeouts, and a 27.00 ERA.
Last season, Nino started the year with Diablos Rojos del Mexico and appeared in 32 games out of the bullpen. He had one start posting an 0-2 record with a 5.94 ERA throwing 33.1 innings, allowing 27 hits, 22 earned runs, three home runs, 22 walks, 31 strikeouts, and a 1.470 WHIP before he was traded to Guerreros de Oaxaca on August 1, 2023.
Nino spent some time last year on the shelf when he was placed on the 15-day injured list on April 24, 2023, and was shortly activated on May 10, 2023.
Nino pitched in two games out of the bullpen for the Guerreros de Oaxaca and posted an 0-1 record with a 27.00 ERA, throwing .2 innings allowing two hits, two earned runs, two walks, and one strikeout.
During the 2022-23 winter league season with Gigantes del Cibao, Nino appeared in three games, threw two innings, allowed six walks, and struck out three batters without giving up an earned run.
In the 2022 regular season, Nino started the year with Guerreros de Oaxaca, appeared in 18 games out of the bullpen, and started in one game, throwing 18.1 innings with a 3.44 ERA, allowing 21 hits, seven earned runs, one home run, 13 walks, 26 strikeouts, and a 1.855 WHIP before he was assigned to the Diablos Rojos del Mexico on June 3, 2022.
With the Diablos Rojos del México, he posted a 3-0 record with a 3.93 ERA. He pitched 34.1 innings in eight appearances and seven starts, allowing 27 hits, 15 earned runs, 24 walks, 42 strikeouts, and a 1.485 WHIP.
In Nino’s eight seasons between the minor leagues, the winter leagues, and LMB, he has appeared in 169 games and 25 starts, posting a lifetime record of 10-20 with a 4.93 ERA. He has also pitched 301 innings, allowing 288 hits, 165 earned runs, 11 home runs, 172 walks, 284 strikeouts, and a 1.528 WHIP.
The Tigres de Quintana Roo went 39-51 in the 2023 regular season, ending in sixth place in the Zona del Sur. They lost in the first round to the Diablos Rojos del México in six games.
The Tigres de Quintana Roo will play their first game of the 2024 LMB regular season at home against the Conspiradores de Querétaro in Cancun, Mexico, at Estadio De Beisbol Beto Avila at 9:30 p.m. EST.
