Game 162 Recaps: One Thing From Each MLB Game

The perfect storm sets up a doubleheader between the Braves and Mets to decide which two teams will claim the remaining National League Wild Card spots. Here’s everything you missed from last night’s MLB action.

Kansas City Royals 4, Atlanta Braves 2 – The Braves set up a win-and-in scenario but could not capitalize. They will now have to play the doubleheader against the New York Mets. A win in either game means the Braves are in.

New York Mets 5, Milwaukee Brewers 0 – The Mets responded to being shut out by pitching a shutout of their own. All eyes are now on the doubleheader against the Braves to decide who makes the postseason.

Arizona Diamondbacks 11, San Diego Padres 2 – The Diamondbacks offense woke up just in time to keep their season alive. A loss would have eliminated them, but they stayed alive behind a Brandon Pfaadt start. He struck out nine in the win.

Chicago White Sox 9, Detroit Tigers 5 – The 2024 Chicago White Sox will ultimately go down as one of the worst teams ever, but they ended the year on a two-game win streak, if that means anything. They beat the Tigers, who have shifted their focus to October baseball.

Cincinnati Reds 3, Chicago Cubs 0 – A three-run tenth inning from the Reds proved to be the only runs of the game. Chicago lost game 162 in a season where they had high hopes.

Philadelphia Phillies 6, Washington Nationals 3—The Phillies did enough to win game 162. They will now get a bye through the Wild Card series as they wait to see who they will play. Aaron Nola struck out seven in five innings of work.

New York Yankees 6, Pittsburgh Pirates 4 – The Yankees gave Juan Soto and Aaron Judge the day off but still got the job done. The top of the order went 4-for-9 with three RBIs and two walks.

Miami Marlins 3, Toronto Blue Jays 1 – The Marlins swept the Blue Jays behind a great day at the plate from Jonah Bride. He went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk.

Boston Red Sox 3, Tampa Bay Rays 1 – The Red Sox pulled out a close win in the final game of the regular season. Quinn Priester went five innings, allowing just one run.

Los Angeles Dodgers 2, Colorado Rockies 1 – Shohei Ohtani stole his 59th base and had a chance to win the batting title and a triple crown. However, he finished the season with a .310 average. Charlie Blackmon went 1-for-2 in his final career game.

Baltimore Orioles 6, Minnesota Twins 2 – James McCann and Heston Kjerstad both hit home runs as the Orioles won their final regular season game.

Texas Rangers 8, Los Angeles Angels 0 – Nathan Eovaldi went seven quality innings and struck out five in the shutout win. José Leclerc and David Robertson finished the job out of the bullpen.

Seattle Mariners 6, Oakland Athletics 4 – The final pitch of the Oakland era of the A’s was a swinging strike three from Max Schuemann.

St. Louis Cardinals 6, San Francisco Giants 1 – Michael McGreevy went eight innings in his third career start. He struck out six and allowed just one earned run.
