 Conor Liguori - World Baseball Network  |    Dec 5th, 2024 3:04pm EST

The 2024-25 LBPRC season in Puerto Rico is intensifying quickly. Players are breaking records on the field, and the league is preparing for its All-Star Game this Sunday, December 8.

LBPRC All-Star Game

The 2024-25 LBPRC All-Star Game will occur this Sunday, December 8, at Estadio Roberto Clemente in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Estadio Roberto Clemente is the home stadium of the LBPRC’s Gigantes de Carolina.

The format of the game will be import players against native Puerto Rican players. For example, Senadores de San Juan’s first baseman, José Abreu, was born in Cuba, so he would play for the imported players’ team. The game begins at 5:21 AST and will be broadcast on WAPA Deportes, a Spanish-language television station.

Cangrejeros de Santurce manager Omar López will lead the import team, and Gigantes de Carolina manager Edwards Guzmán will lead the native club. A celebrity All-Star softball game will take place right before the All-Star Game. Celebrities in the softball game include professional boxer Krystal Rosado, musical artist Auudi, and professional basketball player Filiberto Rivera.

Puerto Rican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2024

On Tuesday, the LBPRC announced six new members in the Puerto Rican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame (Salón de la Fama del Béisbol Profesional de Puerto Rico).

The class of 2024 consists of Major League Baseball Hall of Fame second baseman Roberto Alomar, 1975 Caribbean Series MVP Guillermo Montañez, 18-year LBPRC veteran Jerry Morales, Tom Gamboa, a three-time champion as manager of the Indios de Mayagüez, Rodrigo Otero Suro, who served as the president of the LBPRC for thirteen seasons, and Arturo Suro, the play-by-play announcer for the Indios for over 40 years.

An induction ceremony will take place on Friday, December 20, at Sor Isolina Ferré Center in Ponce, Puerto Rico. According to the LBPRC Instagram page, admission to the ceremony will be free.

José Espada Masterclass on the Bump

Gigantes de Carolina relief pitcher José Espada became the third pitcher in LBPRC history to throw 40 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run in Wednesday’s 6-4 win over the Criollos de Caguas. The 27-year-old has thrown 11 scoreless innings thus far in 2024-25.

Espada’s scoreless streak started during the 2022-23 season for the Gigantes, where he allowed just three earned runs in 22 innings. He allowed no earned runs in eight innings for the club during the 2023-24 season. Espada pitched for the Tokyo Yakult Swallows in Nippon Professional Baseball’s Central League this summer.

The longest scoreless inning streaks in LBPRC history are José De La Torre (49.2) and Fernando Cruz (57.1).
