The Mariachis de Guadalajara of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol forfeited their home game Friday night to the visiting Sultanes de Monterrey when their players did not take the field for the game.
Multiple Mexican media outlets reported that the players and coaches refused to play Friday night because the franchise hasn’t paid their salaries or reimbursed their expenses for several weeks. The LMB said in a statement that they would conduct a full investigation of the situation that led to the walk out.
Proceso, a Mexican news website, reported that the Mariachis organization not only owes the players and coaches money, but also vendors, including food and beverage distributors, hotels, and an animation studio in the Dominican Republic.
The forfeit gave the Sultanes de Monterrey a 9-0 win, pushing their record to 48-37, while the Mariachis, who were eliminated from the playoff race on Thursday, fell to 41-46.
