Yonathan Daza, who started in center field for the Colorado Rockies on opening day in 2023, is headed to the border to play for the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol’s Tecolotes de Los Dos Laredos in 2024, according to MLBTradeRumors.com.
The Tecos split their home games between Uni-Trade Stadium in Laredo, Texas, and Parque La Junta in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Daza made his MLB debut with Colorado in 2019, and has played 288 career games in the Major Leagues, all with the Rockies, slashing .281/.329/.354 with a .683 OPS. In 2023, he won the starting job in center field out of spring training, but got off to a slow start, appearing in 24 games and batting .270 in 74 at-bats before being optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque.
With Albuquerque, the 29-year-old native of Maracay, Venezuela, hit .305/.350/.415 with a .765 OPS, two homers and 19 RBI.
The Tecos finished the 2023 regular season in first place in the LMB’s Zona Norte with a 50-36 record, and swept the Acereros de Monclova in the first round of the playoffs. They topped the Sultanes de Monterrey four games to two in the second round before being eliminated by the Algodoneros de Union Laguna in the Zona Norte championship series.
