The Miami Marlins might’ve found themselves a breakout star in catcher Agustin Ramirez.

Last season at the trade deadline, the Marlins acquired Ramirez and infield prospects Jared Serna and Abraham Ramirez from the New York Yankees in exchange for infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Ramirez, 23, signed with the Yankees as an international free agent in 2018 out of the Dominican Republic. He made his professional debut with the Yankees in the Dominican Summer League in 2019 and worked his way through their system. In 2023, he had a breakout season advancing two levels from their Low-A affiliate, the Tampa Tarpons, to their Double-A affiliate, the Somerset Patriots.

Ramirez started to make a name for himself that year with their High-A affiliate, the Hudson Valley Renegades. He got called up to the Renegades on June 29, 2023, and had nine home runs, 27 RBI, and an OPS of 1.441 in 27 games and 112 at-bats. He was promoted to the Patriots on August 8, 2023.

In 2024, he advanced to their Triple-A affiliate, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, on June 19, 2024, and he was traded to the Marlins on July 27, 2024. He finished the season with the Marlins Triple-A affiliate, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. He began the 2025 with the Jumbo Shrimp and got the call from the Marlins to join the big league club on April 21, 2025.

His minor league career numbers from 2019-24 include 60 home runs, 266 RBI, 53 stolen bases, and a slash line of .266/.352/465 in 1,393 at-bats.

He made an instant impact with the Marlins, going 2-for-3 with a walk, stolen base, and an RBI double against the Cincinnati Reds at loanDepot Park. In his first MLB games he made MLB history when he hit two home runs in his fifth MLB game against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park.

Ramirez had seven extra-base hits in his first five games, which is tied for the most in MLB history. He also is the second player to have nine hits or more and two strikeouts or fewer in his first five games.

Additionally, Ramirez was the first player to do this since Jake Beckley from the 1901 Cincinnati Reds, per the Miami Marlins communications X account. He hit three home runs, four doubles, and a stolen base in this five-game span, and is also the first player to have three games with two extra-base hits in his first five games in at least the last 125 years, per MLB statistician Sara Langs.

The Dominican Republic is thin at the catcher position for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, and Ramirez could push himself into the conversation for a roster spot if he continues to progress in his MLB career. His competition is Houston Astros’ catcher Yanner Diaz and Baltimore Orioles’ catcher Gary Sanchez.

His MLB numbers in the early stages of his career are three home runs, five RBI, one stolen base, a .333 batting average, and an OPS of 1.194 in 27 at-bats.
