The Miami Marlins announced on April 26 that they have placed left-handed pitcher Jesus Luzardo on the 15-day injured list with left elbow tightness and recalled right-handed pitcher Anthony Maldonado from Triple-A Jacksonville.

Luzardo, 26, was born in Lima, Peru; his parents are of Venezuelan descent. He has played six seasons in Major League Baseball with the Oakland Athletics from 2019-21 and was traded to the Marlins on July 28, 2021, in exchange for Starling Marte and cash considerations.

When he debuted on September 11, 2019, he became the first player born in Lima, Peru, to play in the majors.

Luzardo signed a one-year $5.5 million contract with Miami on January 11, avoiding arbitration.

This season, Luzardo started in five games, posting a 0-2 record with a 6.58 ERA, throwing 26 innings, allowing 24 hits, 19 earned runs, five home runs, 13 walks, 27 strikeouts, and a 1.423 WHIP.

During spring training, Luzardo made four starts and posted a 0-2 record, throwing 12 innings with a 5.25 ERA, allowing 13 hits, seven earned runs, three home runs, one walk, and struck out 12 batters.

Last season, Luzardo posted a 10-10 record with a 3.58 ERA in 32 starts, throwing 178.2 innings, allowing 162 hits, 71 earned runs, 22 home runs, 55 walks, 208 strikeouts, and a 1.215 WHIP.

Luzardo played for the Venezuelan national team at the 2023 World Baseball Classic in Pool D at loanDepot Park in Miami. He went 1-0 in one start and did not allow an earned run, throwing four innings, allowing four hits, one walk, and five strikeouts. Venezuela lost to the United States 9-7 in the quarterfinals at loanDepot Park at the 2023 WBC.

In 2022, Luzardo went 4-7 with 18 starts, posting a 3.32 ERA, throwing 100.1 innings, allowing 69 hits, 47 earned runs, 10 home runs, 35 walks, 120 strikeouts, and a 1.037 WHIP.

He was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 15, 2022, and transferred to the 60-day injured list on June 15, 2022, with a left forearm strain. He was then sent on a rehab assignment with Low-A Jupiter. Luzardo made three starts between Low-A Jupiter and Triple-A Jacksonville and posted a 2.31 ERA. He pitched 11.2 innings, allowing five hits, three earned runs, one home run, four walks, and striking out 12.

During his six seasons in the MLB, Luzardo has a lifetime record of 23-30 with a 4.32 ERA. He has made 82 starts and 98 appearances, recording two saves. He has thrown 471.1 innings and allowed 424 hits, 226 earned runs, 67 home runs, 171 walks, 528 strikeouts, and a 1.262 WHIP.
