The MLB Draft League began play in 2021 and has already gained a large following four years later. The league just released their 2025 schedule in which the league’s six teams will play an 80-game season that is split into two half-seasons.
The MLB Draft League operates as an amateur league for the first half of the season. Players from NCAA Division I to III, NAIA, Junior College, and seniors in High School are eligible to compete in the league in an attempt to raise their draft stock. In 2025, each of the six teams in the league will play 34 games in the first half of the season. This year, the opening day of the MLB Draft League is Wednesday, June 4, and the final day of games for the first half of the season is Saturday, July 12.
The second half of the season features paid professional players who are no longer considered amateurs. According to the MLB Draft League website, players receive housing and money for food and travel. In 2025, each team will play 46 games in the second half of the season. The second half of the season begins Wednesday, July 16, and the final day of games is Wednesday, September 3.
The league’s two best teams will compete in the MLB Draft League Championship Game on Thursday, September 4. The six teams in the league are the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, the State College Spikes, the Trenton Thunder, the West Virginia Black Bears, the Frederick Keys, and the Williamsport Crosscutters. The Crosscutters are the reigning champions as they defeated the Thunder 5-4 in the MLB Draft League Championship Game in 2024.
A record-setting 52 players with MLB Draft League experience were selected in the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft. According to league website, 185 players from the league have heard their names called in the annual MLB Draft, and an additional 90 undrafted free agents have signed contracts with MLB organizations.
