The Texas Longhorns are getting an addition to their 2027 pitching staff. Grant Sperandio, the 43rd best player in the 2027 high school class, is graduating from Memorial High School in Houston early. He will play for the Longhorns during the 2027 college baseball season.

Sperandio is also a top ten pitcher in the 2027 high school class with a fastball that reaches 98 miles per hour, according to The Prospect Report on Instagram.

The 18-year-old high school prospect has been committed to Texas since April 2023.

A look at the Texas pitching staff with Sperandio

Sperandio is joining a 2027 Texas pitching staff that has 10 other freshman pitchers.

The Longhorns’ 2026 recruiting class ranked fourth in the country. Trey Rangel, James Jorgensen, Cooper Webb, and Phinn Beaird are four pitchers for the Longhorns who ranked amongst Perfect Game’s top 150 high school prospects in the 2026 class.

Sperandio is another part of what can be a talented young core of Texas Longhorns pitching. It is a core that can have an impact for years to come.

The Longhorns do have some talented returners that will appear a lot on the mound, like Sam Cozart, Brett Crossland, and Dylan Volantis.

Both Cozart and Crossland were big-time pitchers for the Longhorns this past season as freshmen. Therefore, the freshmen this season, including Sperandio, may play a role in how good Texas is.

In 2026, Texas pitching ranked second in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in team ERA (3.98). The Longhorns were also third in the SEC in strikeouts with 698.

With pitching coach Max Weiner on Jim Schlossnagle’s staff, the Longhorns’ pitching has thrived. It helped Texas finish with a 46-15 overall record in 2026 and also allowed them to make an appearance in the College World Series.

Up next for Texas

The Texas Longhorns will begin the 2027 college baseball season in the Shriners Children’s College Showdown. On February 19, they will play the Clemson Tigers at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, which is the home of the Texas Rangers.

The first pitch is at 8 p.m. ET.
