Virginia Tech junior Hudson Lutterman turned some heads during a fall exhibition game against the Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday, October 4. 

Lutterman had a four-hit game against the Cavaliers. Three of his four hits were home runs. 

The performance showed that Lutterman can be a big power threat for the Hokies during the 2027 college baseball season. 

Lutterman’s career at Virginia Tech

Lutterman has played two seasons for Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. He played in 42 games as a freshman in 2025, where he had a .208 batting average with 10 doubles, four home runs, and 22 RBIs. 

Lutterman’s sophomore season in 2026 was a quiet breakout year across the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). He finished the year with a .299 batting average and a .919 OPS. The Knoxville, Tennessee native also had 10 home runs and 45 RBIs. He doubled his RBI total from the 2025 college baseball season. 

Lutterman had a decent postseason for the Hokies in 2026. He had three hits in Virginia Tech’s 17-10 win over Notre Dame in the ACC Tournament, which was a season-high. He also had a hit in the next ACC Tournament game against North Carolina. 

In the NCAA Tournament, Virginia Tech played at Jackie Robinson Stadium in the Los Angeles Regional. In two games against Cal Poly and UCLA, Lutterman had three hits. He had a two-hit game against the Cal Poly Mustangs. 

The junior infielder came up big for Virginia Tech during the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2022.

In 2026, the Virginia Tech Hokies finished 30-26 overall and 15-15 in ACC play. 

Their first NCAA Tournament appearance in four years was brief, as Cal Poly and UCLA beat them in back-to-back regional games.
