Zach Kmatz was one of the most impressive pitchers this summer in the 2026 Cape Cod League. The Oregon State right-hander played for the Brewster Whitecaps.

With the Whitecaps, Kmatz finished with a 1.20 ERA and had 30 strikeouts in 30 innings of work. He also finished with a 3-0 record on the mound and was named first-team All-League team.

This summer shows that Kmatz may make a major impact in Corvallis for the Beavers during his junior season in 2027.

Kmatz and his career with Oregon State

Kmatz has played two seasons with the Oregon State Beavers. In 2025, he was a part of an Oregon State team that went to the College World Series. That season, the right-handed pitcher had a 4.05 ERA in 26 2/3 innings of relief. Kmatz also had 29 strikeouts during that stretch of play.

In 2025, Kmatz picked up two wins on the mound against the Cal State Northridge Matadors and the Florida State Seminoles. The win over Florida State came in game three of the Corvallis super regional. Kmatz was the pitcher who sent the Beavers to the College World Series.

Before his super regional heroics, Kmatz also recorded a save in a game against the USC Trojans in the Corvallis regional during the 2025 NCAA Tournament.

The right-hander took a step back during his sophomore season in 2026. He finished the year with a 5.30 ERA in 18 2/3 innings of work. He also allowed a .355 opposing batting average.

Kmatz's brother made 45 starts with the Beavers

Zach Kmatz is the younger brother of former Oregon State starting pitcher Jacob Kmatz. Jacob played in Corvallis from 2022 through 2024. He made 45 starts on the mound in his college career with the Beavers.

In those 45 starts, Jacob finished with a 4.05 ERA and picked up 20 wins on the mound. He also had 222 strikeouts and allowed an opposing batting average of .235 over the course of his career with Oregon State.

Jacob was a National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-American and a Perfect Game second-team Freshman All-American in 2022. In 2024, he was an NCBWA third-team All-American and was also named first-team All-Pac-12.

Jacob's best start of his career came on April 6, 2024, against the Arizona State Sun Devils. He threw a complete game, struck out six hitters, and allowed just one run. Oregon State won that game 9-1.

After his Oregon State career, Jacob was selected in the fifth round with the 157th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. He currently plays for the Tulsa Drillers, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

According to MLB Pipeline, Kmatz is ranked as the 25th-best prospect in the Dodgers' top-ranked farm system.

Oregon State 2026 season results

In 2026, the Oregon State Beavers finished with a 45-14 overall record. They made the NCAA Tournament for the ninth-straight season and played in the Eugene regional.

Despite picking up NCAA Tournament wins over Yale and Washington State, the Beavers failed to make a super regional for the first time since 2023.
