The South Carolina Gamecocks will play the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers next season. South Carolina head baseball coach Kevin Schnall confirmed it was happening on Sports Talk SC.
There is no set date or time yet for the series or the matchup. However, Schnall did reveal that the Gamecocks will be heading on the road to Coastal Carolina’s home ballpark, Springs Brooks Stadium, in Conway, S.C.
History between South Carolina and Coastal Carolina
The South Carolina Gamecocks and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers have not played each other since April 5, 2016. The Gamecocks won 4-2, and the game was played in Columbia at Founders Park.
Despite the loss, Coastal Carolina got the last laugh that season. The Chanticleers went all the way to Omaha and won the 2016 national championship over the Arizona Wildcats.
Since 1978, South Carolina and Coastal Carolina have played 18 times. The Gamecocks are 12-6 against the Chanticleers during that span of games.
The all-time series at Springs Brooks Stadium has been more competitive. Both teams have won four games apiece out of eight games total in Coastal Carolina’s home ballpark.
The Gamecocks historically dominate the Chanticleers at Founders Park in Columbia. South Carolina holds an 8-2 record against Coastal Carolina at home.
Schnall returning to Conway
Schnall will be a major storyline in the 2027 matchup between the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
The newly-named South Carolina head coach arrived in Columbia after two seasons as the head coach of the Chanticleers.
During those two years, Schnall won 93 total games. The Chanticleers had a 47-13 record in Sun Belt games as well.
In 2025, Schnall guided Coastal Carolina to the College World Series. They played in the national championship against the LSU Tigers and finished as national runners-up. That same season, the Chanticleers won the Sun Belt regular season and conference championships.
After another successful season where Schnall led Coastal Carolina to the NCAA Tournament, he left to take over as the head coach at South Carolina.
A matchup between South Carolina and Coastal Carolina in 2027 means Schnall will face off against his former team. With the matchup heading to Conway, it will create a raucous and crazy environment. It will be one of the best matchups in all of college baseball next season.
