This week, the VCU Rams and head baseball coach Sean Thompson reached an agreement on a contract extension. The extension added three years to Thompson’s existing contract with the school, and it will last through the 2031 season.
Thompson just wrapped up his second season as the head coach of VCU. He led the Rams to a 38-25 overall record and a 20-10 record in Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Rams won the Atlantic 10 Tournament and made it to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time this decade.
In the 2026 NCAA Tournament, VCU played in the Chapel Hill Regional at Boshamer Stadium. The Rams were able to pick up a 5-4 win in the regional against the Tennessee Volunteers. It was VCU’s fifth NCAA Tournament win this decade.
Thompson now has 55 wins in two years as the Rams’ head coach. He is also the youngest coach in Division I college baseball.
Thompson and his playing days at VCU
Before jumping into the coaching profession, Thompson played college baseball at VCU from 2015 to 2018. He was a right-handed pitcher for the Rams.
In four seasons playing college baseball in Richmond, Thompson had a 3.30 ERA in 300 ⅓ innings. He also finished his career with 249 strikeouts and allowed an opposing batting average of .231.
Thompson threw a complete game for VCU during the 2017 college baseball season. In a 8-1 win for the Rams over the La Salle Explorers, Thompson had 13 strikeouts and gave up just one earned run over the course of nine full innings.
In 2015, during his freshman season, Thompson was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team. That season, the right-hander had a 3.48 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 64 ⅔ innings.
When his career was all said and done, Thompson finished with a 27-10 record over the course of 51 starts. He has the second-most wins all-time by a VCU pitcher.
The future of VCU baseball under Thompson
Thompson’s contract extension with VCU shows their commitment to having a winning baseball program. Entering his third season in Richmond, the 31-year-old head coach has already won the Rams some hardware and has led them to the NCAA Tournament.
Under Thompson, VCU seems poised to remain a consistent NCAA Tournament team for quite some time.
