The Women’s Professional Baseball League kicked off its inaugural season on Saturday with a contest between two of the league’s four organizations.
The four teams in the WPBL are the Boston Hunters, Los Angeles Queens, New York Heights, and San Francisco Firebells. Each team will play 15 regular, seven-inning regular season games.
Since the disbanding of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1954, there had been no professional women’s baseball league in the United States.
Here’s how Saturday’s contest played out.
Los Angeles Queens 10, New York Heights 8 – This was the first game in WPBL history. Los Angeles scored six runs in the final two innings to erase a four-run deficit.
Former Little League World Series standout Mo’ne Davis scored the first run in league history for Los Angeles, and Heights catcher Denae Benites went 4-for-4 and hit the first home run in league history in the bottom of the fourth.
Michelle Roche and Amira Hondras combined to go 4-for-8 with six RBIs at the plate for Los Angeles. Maggie Foxx threw two innings and played left field for New York, throwing two innings of one-run ball.
Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois, will host all WPBL games.
Eric Young Sr., a former Major League Baseball second baseman and outfielder, is the manager of the Queens. Following his 15-year playing career, he was a third- and first-base coach for four MLB organizations, including the Atlanta Braves.
The manager of the Heights is Rachelle Henley, a pioneer in women’s baseball. She is the first female to manage in the WPBL after coaching in the Bay Area.
Today’s game features the Firebells and Hunters at 7:30 p.m. EDT at Robin Roberts Stadium.
