New York Yankees infield prospect Dax Kilby is having an impressive year at Single-A Tampa despite a lingering hamstring strain.

Kilby, 19, is ranked as New York's No. 2 prospect on MLB Pipeline, behind only shortstop George Lombard Jr. The shortstop was the 39th overall pick in the 2025 draft out of Newnan High School in Georgia.

In 32 games in Single-A, Kilby hit .261/.448/.435 with four home runs and 12 stolen bases in 15 attempts. Impressively, he's drawn more walks (39) than he has struck out (31) in 154 plate appearances.

He managed to do the same thing during his first Single-A stint, walking 13 times compared to 11 strikeouts with a .353 batting average in 81 trips to the plate in 2025.

A patient approach and an increase in strength will help Kilby rise through the minor league ranks. He plans to continue his development after the season, suiting up for the Salt River Rafters in the Arizona Fall League.

The Yankees have sent many notable prospects to the AFL in recent years. Before a trade to the Milwaukee Brewers for closer Devin Williams before the 2025 season, Caleb Durbin set the single-season AFL stolen base record by swiping 29 bags.

At six-foot-2, Kilby could be a candidate to transition to second base by the time he reaches the Majors. Kilby's MLB Pipeline bio reads, "He'll stay there [shortstop] for now but profiles better at second base or center field, and he could be a solid defender at either spot."

Of course, the Yankees have plenty of time to figure out where he fits best on the field. Kilby won't turn 20 until November. Without the hamstring injury, he may have received a promotion to High-A Hudson Valley.

However, there's no real reason to rush Kilby's development. The Yankees have Lombard and Anthony Volpe as their double-play combination up in the middle in the Majors.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is an impending free agent, but the front office won't consider Kilby's high-ranking prospect status when discussing Chisholm's future with the organization.

For now, Kilby looks to make up for lost time by playing in the AFL.

The Tampa Tarpons trail the Jupiter Hammerheads (Miami Marlins) one game to none in the Florida State League best-of-three Championship Series. Kilby went 0-for-2 with two walks and a strikeout in Game 1.
