Nicaraguan Baseball (LBPN): News, Notes, and Where to Watch

 David Polli - World Baseball Network  |    Nov 4th, 2024 2:37pm EST

The LBPN just wrapped up its opening weekend in Nicaragua. Some teams are off to hot starts, while others still are looking for their first win. Here are the news and notes about what happened and what is coming up in the LBPN as of Nov. 4.

Indios de Boer Start Hot Out of the Gate

After finishing in last place during last year’s regular season, the tribe has come out of the gate hot to start 2024. They defeated Tigres de Chinandega in their season opener on Nov. 2 by a score of 7-6, thanks to a big multi-hit game from shortstop Luis Gonzalez. The game was called after six innings due to inclement weather, but it had gone on long enough for the Boer to pick up the win. On Sunday, the Boer offense blitzed the pitching staff for Gigantes de Rivas, whom they defeated 7-2. The team had 13 hits and seven runs in five innings as, once again, weather played a factor in ending the game early.

Rogelio Quesada’s Strong Performance on the Mound

Rogelio Quesada, starting pitcher for Tren del Norte, provided six solid innings for his squad to help them pick up their first win of the season against Gigantes de Rivas 9-2 on Nov. 2. The 31-year-old right-hander from Cuba pitched for Dorados de Chihuahua in the LMB earlier in 2024, and started off strong in winter play. Quesada threw six innings, allowed four hits, struck out four batters, and allowed two earned runs against Gigantes on Nov. 2. His quality start was crucial in Tren del Norte picking up their first win of the season, as they were held scoreless after six innings. However, in the top of the seventh inning, the offense woke up and scored three runs on their way to a blowout. Quesada’s strong pitching performance makes him the league leader in innings pitched as of Nov.4, 2024.

Game Rescheduled between Tigres and Tren

Due to harsh weather, the game originally scheduled for Nov. 3 between Tigres de Chinandega and Tren del Norte at noon EST has been moved to Nov. 11 at 6:00 p.m. EST. The game was expected to take place at Rufo Marin Stadium, but officials called off the game at 4:20 p.m. after the rain did too much damage to the field without letting up for the game to be played.

Home Runs, Home Runs, and More Home Runs

Through five combined games this season in the LBPN, nine home runs have been hit. This power surge by players in the league has provided some high-scoring matchups and exciting moments early on in the winter. Emmanuel Trujillo of the Tigres leads the league with two home runs in as many games. Eight different individual players have hit a home run so far this year, and four out of the five teams have a player who has hit a home run. Tren del Norte is the only squad still looking for their first hit to leave the park.

Leones de Leon Last Winless Team in LBPN

The Leones de Leon are the only team still without a win in the victory column this season in the LBPN. The Leones lost a high-scoring thriller on Opening Day of the league against Tigres 11-8 to fall to 0-1. That record still stands, as they have not had a game since opening day. Their next scheduled game will be on Nov. 5 against Tren del Norte at home. The Leones hope that the long break from their first contest will help them produce a better result the second time around.

LBPN Standings as of Nov. 4

The next games will be played on Tuesday, Nov. 5. There will be two matchups:

Tigres de Chinandega @ Indios del Bóer

Tren del Norte @ Leonés de León

You can watch the LBPN on their official YouTube all season long.
