The Guardians came away with the win in a close game against the Cubs that had shades of the 2016 World Series. Here’s everything you missed from yesterday in the MLB.

Guardians 9, Cubs 8

  • Josh Naylor gave Cleveland the lead with a single in the eighth inning after a back-and-forth game. Rookie Jhonkensy Noel hit a three-run homer and a solo home run to help the Guardians win the first game of the series. Chicago is three and a half games out of a wildcard spot in the NL.

Reds 6, Cardinals 1

  • The Reds scored all six runs on homers by Spencer Steer, who had five RBIs, and Elly De La Cruz who leads the team with 21. Andrew Abbott allowed one run on five hits in six and two-thirds. Cincinnati is four games out of a wildcard spot, while the Cardinals are two games back.

Astros 6, Rays 1

  • Houston won their sixth straight game after Framber Valdez struck out nine and allowed one run in five and two-thirds. Yanier Diaz hit a three-run homer that charged a four-run third inning to grow the Astros lead. Houston took a half-game lead in the AL West with the Mariners off.

Red Sox 5, Rangers 4

  • The Red Sox overcame a one-run deficit in the 10th with a pinch-hit double that tied it from Emmanuel Valdez before Rob Refsynder drove in the winning run. Boston ended their four-game losing streak and remained a spot out of the AL wildcard race.

Twins 8, Royals 3

  • Minnesota scored six runs in the second inning off a three-run homer from Willie Castro and a two-run shot from Royce Lewis. The Twins took the first game of the series between teams battling for the AL Central and wildcard positioning. Kansas City holds the third wildcard spot, trailing the Twins by one and a half games.

White Sox 12, Yankees 2

  • Gavin Sheets tied a career-high with four hits and drove in four runs as the White Sox gave interim manager Grady Sizemore his first win. Chicago set a new season high in runs and hits, with 18, in the first game of their series against the Yankees. New York fell out of a tie for first in the AL East.

Dodgers 5, Brewers 2

  • Mookie Betts hit a home run in the third and drove in three runs in his return from a broken left hand after being out since June 16. Shohei Ohtani hit a two-run homer in the fifth to grow the Dodgers lead. Los Angeles won their fourth straight and took the first game in Milwaukee in a series between NL Division leaders.

Blue Jays 4, Angels 2

  • Toronto scored all four runs in the third inning, which was capped off by a Leonardo Jimenez two-run home run. Bowden Francis struck out eight hitters and allowed one run in seven innings for the Blue Jays.

Padres 2, Pirates 1

  • San Diego won their eighth of the last nine after Kyle Higashioka drove in the winning run on a sac fly in the eighth inning. The Padres trail the Dodgers in the NL West by four games and sit in the second wildcard spot. Pittsburgh lost their eighth in a row and are five games out of wildcard position.

Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 4

  • The Diamondbacks completed the comeback and won their fourth straight. Arizona took the lead in the seventh when Corbin Carroll and Kevin Newman scored on back-to-back wild pitches. The deficit in the NL West remains three and a half games behind the Dodgers.

Braves 1, Mets 0

  • A pitching duel between Chris Sale and Blake Snell kept both offenses off the board for most of the game. Sale allowed three hits and struck out 12 in seven innings of work. Snell carried a no-hit bid through the sixth and stuck out 11 in six and two-thirds. Travis d’Arnaud pinch-hit in the tenth and drove in the winning run on a sac fly. The Braves have a one-game lead for the third wildcard spot.
