In game two of the Serie del Rey, the Diablos Rojos del Mexico got good pitching and efficient offensive production.

The Sultanes de Monterrey got neither, and are now down two games to none after suffering a historic 17-0 defeat in game two.

Erick Leal threw 6 1/3 shutout innings and allowed two hits, striking out eight and walking one, and Julian Ornelas went 3-for-5 with five RBIs, hitting a solo homer in the second inning and a two-run shot in the sixth, as the Diablos Rojos manhandled the Sultanes.

In all, the Diablos Rojos scored 17 runs on 18 hits and three walks, and five different Sultanes pitchers allowed at least two runs in the game.

The Diablos took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second, getting a three-run homer from Aristides Aquino and then a solo homer from Ornelas.

Three innings later, Mexico City put the game out of reach, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the fifth, the sixth time in 2024 the Diablos have scored eight or more runs in an inning. Seven of the runs came with two outs in the inning, starting with a two-run double by Julian Ornelas. Three batters later, Franklin Barreto hit two-run single to left, and Robinson Cano followed Barreto with a three-run homer to left center.

With two more runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth, the Diablos set a record for the largest margin of victory in Serie del Rey history, as well as the largest margin of victory in a shutout. Previously, the largest margin of victory in a Serie del Rey contest was a 9-0 win by the Tigres de Quintana Roo over the Acereros de Monclova in game six of the 2015 series. The 17 runs scored by Mexico City are the third-most ever scored in a Serie del Rey game, behind the Saraperos de Saltillo’s 21-run output in game six of the 2010 series against the Pericos de Puebla and 19 runs scored by the Tigres against Saltillo in game three of the 2005 series.

Game three of the Serie del Rey is Saturday night at Estadio Exxon Mobil Super in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, at 9:30 p.m. EDT. Trevor Bauer will start for the Diablos Rojos against Steven Tarpley for the Sultanes.
