Top Five Baseball Docs to Watch Over the Holiday Break

Baseball season may be over, but that does not mean you can’t get your fix of America’s pastime. Baseball has left fans with so many memorable moments and stories. Why not relieve some of them from home during the holidays? Here are five baseball documentaries to take a look at over the break.

  1. The Comeback: 2004 Boston Red Sox

A 2024 docuseries on Netflix outlining the historic 2004 title run of the Boston Red Sox. The three-part feature goes behind the scenes of the Red Sox season. From key storylines from the 2003 season to the unbelievable 3-0 comeback against the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series, baseball fans should be captivated by some of the game’s legends looking back on a magical season in Boston.

  1. The Captain

Derek Jeter’s career is one of the most storied in the history of baseball. The Hall of Famer spent the entirety of his career in the spotlight for one of the most historic franchises in sports. Jeter’s career was not without controversy. Jeter constantly made headlines, and his relationship with Alex Rodriguez was always a talking point. The seven-part series features interviews with Jeter’s family and former teammates. The five-time World Series champion dawned the honor of Yankees captain and became one of the faces of the sport during his playing career. Fans can relive the ups and downs of his career through this ESPN production.

  1. No No: A Dockumentary

A no-hitter is rare enough as is, but what about a no-hitter while under the influence of LSD? Dock Ellis’ memorable no-hitter is well documented, and this 2014 documentary takes fans through the 1970 no-hitter. The feature also takes fans through the life of Dock Ellis and his unique lifestyle. The story also focuses on Ellis’ addiction while also taking a look at his place in the racial tension in the United States at the time.

  1. Heading Home: The Tale of Team Isreal

The World Baseball Classic always gives fans an unheralded star to root for as they represent their nation on the biggest stage. However, in 2017, an entire team became the story. This 2018 documentary takes a look at Team Isreal and their improbable run in the World Baseball Classic. From being the final qualifier and 41st-ranked team, Israel went 3-0 in Pool A. With multiple Major League players on the roster, Team Isreal became the talk of the tournament after shocking the World in the first round.

  1. Chicago Stories: The Black Sox Scandal

This documentary is part of an eight-episode series by WTTW that focuses on impactful events that shaped the city of Chicago. Each episode is its own unique story, and this one focuses on one of the most controversial moments in baseball. The 1919 White Sox became known as the Black Sox when they were found to have multiple players accepting bribes to throw the World Series. The documentary not only explores the impact it had on baseball but the city as a whole.
