UK Sport announced on Monday, December 16, that it will provide £1 million in funding to Great Britain Baseball and Softball over the next four years for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. This is set to be the largest investment in the sport’s history.
In total, Great Britain invested £330 million in Government and National Lottery funding, which will benefit more than 50 sports heading to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. UK Sport’s mission is to create the greatest decade of extraordinary sporting moments, helping to reach, inspire, and unite the nation.
As for Great Britain’s National Baseball Team, they competed for the first time in World Baseball Classic history in 2023, led by manager Drew Spencer. They went 1-3 in their first year in the WBC, with their only win coming against Colombia in a 7-5 victory. They had tried to qualify in the 2013 and 2017 editions of the WBC, but they finally reached the tournament in 2023.
Great Britain’s manager, Drew Spencer, took to social media yesterday in awe of the news, explaining how far Great Britain has come since he first became head coach of the national team. He explained how in the years where uniforms didn’t arrive on time, they had to write numbers on the back of t-shirts with a Sharpee, and Spencer had to call on friends and family to help make donations for the team to compete, and they had to charge players to play on the team.
It is truly remarkable to see UK Sport helping to brighten the future for several people living in the United Kingdom by helping them pursue their dreams. These dreams will provide a valuable foundation for many years to come. It will be exciting to see which players will represent Great Britain at the World Baseball Classic in 2026 and what their roster could potentially look like at the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
