WBSC Baseball5 Rule Changes Announced

Baseball5 is an event created by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), and they’ve introduced some new changes to improve safety and game flow. The updates took effect on September 1 to help create a safer and more dynamic environment for all participants.

As part of the update to the rules, a new rule was introduced, which allows runners to use the batter’s box to score and, therefore, avoid collisions at home plate. Another rule implemented will be the introduction of timeouts to give teams more strategic flexibility. Also, stricter regulations on unsportsmanlike behavior to ensure fair play will be enforced.

Here is a breakdown of how each new rule will have an impact on Baseball5’s play:

Batters Box: To help reduce collisions that could result in serious injuries, runners coming from third base will be allowed to use the batter’s box to score a run instead of having to step directly on home plate. This will help prevent fewer injuries between runners and fielders, creating a safer way to still score a run and keeping competition even.

Timeouts: The addition of the timeout is definitely an interesting rule. Here is how it will work: Each team is allowed one 30-second timeout per set. This gives teams the ability to regroup, make adjustments, and manage the game more effectively. In order for a timeout to be successful, the coach must request it and communicate it directly to the Home Plate Official for proper documentation.

Unsportsmanlike behavior: Tightened rules have been made to deal with unsportsmanlike behavior. If a Game Official sports any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct from any delegation members, including players, coaches, and managers, they could be ejected from the game. Also, if a delegation member protests a decision made by a Game Official, a verbal or written warning may be presented—a second warning results in automatic ejection.

Foreign substances: Just as we see in every other league in baseball worldwide, the use of foreign substances like pine tar or glue to improve the ball’s grip is explicitly forbidden. Any player caught using these substances will be automatically ejected from the game.

This will be the sixth edition of the Official Baseball5 Rulebook. The first set of rules was published in March 2018, along with a dedicated website and instructional video of the sport. Since then, several updates have been made to the rules to help enhance the play of Baseball5.
