West Virginia is the NCAA’s Biggest Surprise Team of 2025

On Sunday, the West Virginia Mountaineers completed a weekend sweep of the Central Florida Knights in Orlando. This is the fourth weekend sweep in Big 12 play in a row for the Mountaineers.

West Virginia is 37-5 overall and 16-3 in conference play. Their schedule has even had the unfavorable factor of more road games than home games. However, that has not fazed head coach Steve Sabins’ team. Their record on the road is a fabulous 22-2.

They are still a great team at home in Kendrick Family Ballpark in Morgantown, too. The Mountaineers’ home record is 15-3 this season.

This success stacks West Virginia up at the top of the Big 12 in first place. They are ahead of other great teams in the conference like Kansas, TCU, Arizona, and Arizona State.

The best part of West Virginia’s game is its pitching. With a 3.68 team ERA, they are the best pitching team right now in the Big 12 and rank ninth in the country overall.

Their batting is nothing to be ashamed of. The Mountaineers have a team batting average of .311. This ranks them third in the Big 12 and they are 20th in the country.

West Virginia is currently 17th in D1 Baseball’s rankings as they look to chase down the Big 12 regular season championship. If they find a way to win it, this would be the second regular season title in three seasons.

Up Next

The Mountaineers have a midweek battle against the Marshall Thundering Herd. This will be a neutral site game in Charleston, W. Va. at GoMart Ballpark. This is normally home to the Charleston Dirty Birds, a minor league team without an MLB affiliation.

The first pitch for this neutral site game between West Virginia and Marshall in Charleston is scheduled for 6 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, April 30.
