Yankees Promote Top Prospect George Lombard Jr. to Somerset Patriots

The New York Yankees promoted their top prospect, infielder George Lombard Jr., to their Double-A affiliate, the Somerset Patriots, on May 4, per ESPN reporter Jeff Passan.

Lombard Jr.,19, got off to a scorching start for the Yankees High-A affiliate, the Hudson Valley Renegades. His numbers are one home run, 13 RBI, 11 stolen bases, and an OPS of .983 in 82 at-bats with the Renegades this season. He was Yankees first-round draft pick in the 2023 MLB Draft out of Gulliver Prep High School in Pinecrest, Florida.

He added some good size to his 6-foot-2 frame this past offseason and is now 190 pounds. Scouts took notice of his growth in spring training, along with his home runs and smooth defense with the big league club. This spring, he had two home runs, four RBI, and an OPS of .748 in 26 at-bats.

MLB Pipeline.com currently has him ranked in their Top 100 prospects at 97. A Baseball America scout told World Baseball Network that they could see Lombard Jr. being ranked in their top 30 prospects before the end of this season.

He has a baseball background, with his father, George Lombard Sr., a former MLB player and now a coach with the Detroit Tigers. Lombard’s younger brother, Jacob Lombard, is a top prospect in the 2026 class for high school baseball, and he will also graduate from Gulliver Prep.

Last season, Lombard played the majority of his games with the Yankees’ low-A affiliate, the Tampa Tarpons, and got promoted to the Renegades in August 2024. His combined numbers at both levels in 2024 were five home runs, 45 RBI, 11 stolen bases, and a slash line of .231/.338/.334 in 425 at-bats.

Lombard is a right-handed hitting shortstop, but has also shown the versatility to play third base and second base in his minor league career.

He made his professional debut with the Yankees’ Florida Complex League team in 2023 and also played nine games with the Tarpons in 2023.

The Somerset Patriots’ next game is on May 6 at 6:35 p.m. EDT and can be streamed on MiLB.TV.
