The West Virginia Mountaineers are heading to the College World Series in Omaha for the first time in program history. Two dominant wins over the Cal Poly Mustangs in the Morgantown super regional got the job done for head coach Steve Sabins’ team.

Seven Home Runs and 29 Runs over the Weekend for West Virginia
The Mountaineers’ offense was clicking and used the long ball to their advantage during the Morgantown super regional. West Virginia had seven home runs during their two games against Cal Poly.
Over the course of those two games, Ben Lumsden and Tyrus Hall finished with two home runs apiece. Lumsden’s two home runs both came during game two of the super regional against the Mustangs. Those long balls were his second and third ones of the season.
Other West Virginia players who hit home runs include Sean Smith, Gavin Kelly, and Armani Guzman.
The Mountaineers outscored Cal Poly 29-3 over the weekend. As a team, they had 43 hits across both games.
Chansen Cole shines with a big-time outing in game one
In game one, Chansen Cole started on the mound for West Virginia. His start would set the tone for the remainder of the super regional.
In seven innings of work, Cole had 11 strikeouts. He allowed two earned runs and did not walk any batters while throwing 121 total pitches.
This season, Cole has been a solid transfer portal addition for West Virginia. He has filled in nicely in the Mountaineers’ starting rotation.
In 2026, the Boiling Springs, S.C.-native has a 10-1 record with a 2.85 ERA in 94 2/3 innings of work. Over that same stretch, he has 106 strikeouts and has allowed an opposing batting average of .214.
Up next for West Virginia
The West Virginia Mountaineers will face the Troy Trojans in their first-ever College World Series game at Charles Schwab Field. The game is on Friday, June 12, and the first pitch is to be determined.
