On Wednesday, December 11, the Tigres del Licey of LIDOM honored pitcher Luis Gil before their game against the Aguilas Cibaenas. Gil threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Gil won the American League Rookie of the Year Award in 2024, beating out teammate Austin Wells and Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser. He was astounding on the hill for the Yankees, throwing to a 15-7 record, posting a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts, pitching in 151.2 innings, and walking 77 batters while striking out 171.

Before making his MLB debut with the Yankees in 2021, Gil pitched with the Tigres del Licey during the 2020-21 season. Pitching in two games and making one start, Gil finished with a 1-1 record, a 6.35 ERA, striking out four batters in five and two-thirds innings.

As well as throwing out the first pitch before Licey’s game, Gil also received a plaque of recognition, honoring him for winning the A.L. Rookie of the Year Award. It will be fascinating to see future international-born award winners recognized in leagues outside of Major League Baseball.
