As we enter 2025, we are just one year closer to the sixth edition of the World Baseball Classic. With 16 teams already qualified for the action in about a year from now, let’s take a look at what a potential lineup could look like for the Dominican Republic.
While many expect Manny Machado to be a starter on the 2026 squad, we could see a combination of both Machado and Devers getting reps in the DH slot, depending on the matchup for the day.
In terms of pitching, it would be intriguing to see Luis Severino get the nod for the Dominican’s first game in 2026. Recently signing with the Athletics, Severino pitched in 2024 as a part of the New York Mets, helping them reach the National League Championship Series, their first appearance since 2015. The 30-year-old threw to an 11-7 record, posting a 3.91 ERA in 31 starts, striking out 161 batters in 182 innings. Other candidates who could bid to lead D.R.’s rotation are Freddy Peralta, Luis Gil, and Sandy Alcantara.
As for their bullpen, Emmanuel Clase looks to be the favorite to win the job as the closing pitcher. In 74 games in 2024, Clase collected 47 saves, pitching to a 4-2 record with a 0.61 ERA, picking up 66 strikeouts and walking 10 batters across 74.1 innings of work. A few other pitchers that could be considered are Bryan Abreu, Camilo Doval, and Yimi Garcia.
The 2026 World Baseball Classic will begin on March 5 and run until March 17. The Dominican Republic will be part of Pool D, facing Venezuela, the Netherlands, and Israel. Pool D will be played at loanDepot Park in Miami, Florida.
