The Tiburones de La Guaira weren't toothless last year, but they certainly didn't feast upon their opponents on their way to a 27-29 record last season.

Over the offseason, though, the Tiburones have been living every week like it's shark week, putting together a solid starting rotation and, just this week, adding two Major Leaguers to the lineup for the coming season.

Infielder Gabriel Arias and catcher Sebastian Rivero have signed with the Tiburones for the coming season, according to a report from El Emergente.

Rivero, 27, slashed .286/.357/.405 with La Guaira in 25 games last season, hitting two homers and driving in 15 runs in 25 games. The 2026-27 season will be Rivero's fourth in the Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional, where he's played a total of 64 games with a .238/.322/.326 slash line with two homers and 34 RBIs. In 69 MLB games with the Kansas City Royals and Los Angeles Angels, Rivero has a career .197/.247/.237 line over parts of four seasons, and is 13-for-53 in 24 games this year.

Arias, 26, has spent five seasons in MLB and has split 2026 between Cleveland, the Chicago Cubs, and the New York Mets with a .250/.308/.250 in 50 games split amongst the three clubs. He's previously played five seasons of winter ball, three with La Guaira and two with Santurce in Puerto Rico's LBPRC, where, in 146 games, he batted .251/.315/.402 in 146 games with 16 homers and 64 RBIs.

The two MLBers will join a mostly revamped starting rotation in La Guaira, which will feature returners Ricardo Pinto and Angel Macuare along with newcomers Luis Patino and Caleb Smith, according to Tiburones Report.

A native of Barranquilla, Colombia, Patino has played two seasons of winter ball in LIDOM, making five appearances for the Gigantes del Cibao in 2023-24, where he threw 12 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits, striking out eight and walking six. He threw seven innings over three appearances with the Aguilas Cibaenas last year, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits and six walks. He previously made 45 appearances in MLB between 2020-23 with San Diego, Tampa Bay, and the Chicago White Sox, posting a 5.02 ERA in 136 1/3 innings. He split this summer between the Diablos Rojos del Mexico and Sultanes de Monterrey, posting an 11.19 ERA in 23 1/3 innings.

Smith, 34, made 147 appearances in MLB totaling 447 innings over six seasons with a 4.55 ERA and 478 strikeouts. He previously pitched in winter ball with the Mayos de Navojoa of the Liga Mexicana del Pacifico in 2024-25, making four starts totaling 16 1/3 innings with a 4.41 ERA and 21 strikeouts. Last season, he made one start for the Gigantes del Cibao, throwing 2 1/3 innings and allowing five runs on two hits and five walks, striking out four.

Macuare was arguably La Guaira's best starter last winter, throwing 40 1/3 innings over 10 starts with a 3.79 ERA, 26 strikeouts, and 16 walks in his first season in the LVBP.

Pinto, 31, is returning for his sixth season in La Guaira after seeing limited action last winter. He's made 44 career appearances for the Tiburones, 26 of them starts, totaling 151 innings with a 4.41 ERA, 129 strikeouts and 60 walks, and was a key starter for the 2023-24 Tiburones team that won the 2024 Caribbean Series in Miami, where he made two starts and threw 10 2/3 innings at loanDepot Park, allowing a single earned run on 10 hits, striking out 14 and walking three.
