On August 25, the NCAA announced that the ABS will be implemented across all three divisions of college baseball in 2027. The system will be an option for teams in all divisions to use for regular-season and postseason games.
The ABS in 2027 that is going to college baseball on a national level will still be treated as experimental, according to ESPN.
ABS was used in the SEC Tournament
College baseball has already experimented with ABS. During the 2026 season, it was used during the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Alabama.
Players and coaches in the SEC raved about how good the system was.
Florida Gators left fielder Blake Cyr said that it was "awesome for the sport." Georgia head coach Wes Johnson said it was "phenomenal" after he led the Bulldogs to the SEC Tournament championship.
One of the best coaches in college baseball history, Vanderbilt's Tim Corbin, had this to say about ABS.
"I like it a lot. I think it helps both sides. Anything that takes the emotion out of the game from a call is a good thing for baseball."
The system that was used for 2026 SEC Tournament games was similar to the one Major League Baseball has been using for the 2026 season.
In the MLB, ABS has been a success. A total of 54% of challenges have resulted in overturned calls, according to Baseball Savant. There have been over 8,500 ABS challenges in Major League Baseball this season.
