The professional career of Danry Vasquez, who now splits his time between his native Venezuela in the winter and the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol in the summer, was long ago derailed by an off-field violent incident.

Now, he’s suspended indefinitely by the LMB after a disgraceful on-field incident that sparked a bench-clearing brawl in Sunday night’s game between Vasquez’s Toros de Tijuana and the Acereros de Monclova in the finale of the penultimate series of the LMB’s regular season.

In the fourth inning, the Toros had runners on first and third with no outs and Jonathan Guzman at the plate. With Vasquez on third, Guzman hit into a fielder’s choice at the hot corner, and Amador fielded the ball cleanly. He threw to Monclova catcher Jose Felix, who sent the ball back to Amador. The third baseman forced Vasquez out of the basepath and then tagged him for the first out of the inning.

Vasquez, it would seem, took exception to the tag, hitting Amador in the upper body with his left hand before punching the Monclova infielder in the face with a right, knocking him to the turf. He then kicked Amador in the body with his right foot while the Acereros’ third baseman lay supine on the ground, drawing both teams out of the dugout. Vasquez was then tackled and a brawl ensued as the benches and dugouts emptied.

“The Executive Presidency of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol Banorte reports that player Danry Vásquez of the Tijuana Toros club is suspended immediately and indefinitely from the LMB Banorte for the events that occurred this Sunday, Aug. 2, in the third game of the series between the Monclova Steelers and the Tijuana Toros,” the league said in a statement issued Monday morning. “LMB Banorte condemns this type of aggression and any type of violence, which are not compatible with the League’s values ​​of fair play and respect for the opponent, and which endanger the physical integrity and career of a fellow professional.”

Plate umpire Gustavo Pena ejected Vasquez and Toros pitcher Adonis Medina, as well as Monclova first baseman Ryan Hernandez and second baseman Jecksson Flores from the game following the fracas.

According to a post on the social media network X by Mexican journalist Rosa Lilia Torres of RTN Medios, Hernandez suffered a broken arm and left the ballpark in an ambulance. A slow-motion examination of the video of the fracas shows Hernandez nailing Vasquez from behind with his right arm, knocking him to the ground in front of the pitcher’s mound as both teams confront each other.

Vasquez was arrested and charged with assault causing bodily injury of a family member in 2016 after he was caught on video assaulting his then-girlfriend in a stairwell of Whataburger Park in Corpus Christi, Texas. At the time, Vasquez was an outfield prospect playing for Double-A Corpus Christi, two steps below Major League Baseball, when the assault occurred. He completed a diversion program and served no jail time for the incident. The Astros released him in August 2016, and he hasn’t returned to affiliated baseball.

The Ocumare del Tuy, Venezuela native has since played for five different teams in the LMB, part of a season in the independent American Association, and with the Leones del Caracas, Tiburones de La Guaira, and Cardenales de Lara in Venezuela’s Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional in the winter.

In 2024, Vasquez, then with the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos, was suspended by the LMB for a game after an incident in the ninth inning of Game 6 of the first round playoff series between the Tecos and Monclova.

The Liga Mexicana de Beisbol has yet to issue a statement regarding the incident in Sunday’s game.
