New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez has arrived in Valencia, Venezuela, where he'll play with the reigning Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Professional champions, the Navegantes del Magallanes, for the upcoming winter baseball season.

Alvarez, 24, played 113 games for the Mets this season, slashing .233/.311/.399 with 16 homers and 43 RBIs. He's played 417 games over parts of five seasons in the Major Leagues with the Mets with a career triple slash line of .231/.307/.421, 64 homers and 186 RBIs.

With Magallanes, Alvarez is expected to primarily play as a first baseman and designated hitter according to a report from Meridiano's Theoscar Mogollón González, who noted that the Mets are not allowing him to play behind the plate with the Turks. First base could be a good fit for Alvarez, who has improved defensively behind the plate in MLB but is still generally viewed as a liability when a bat is not in his hands.

Manager Yadier Molina, who took over for Eduardo Perez midway through last season and then led the Navegantes to their 14th LVBP title and the Serie de Las Americas championship, has also arrived in camp after signing a contract extension that will keep him with the Valencia-based club for this season and next.

Other notables in camp with the Navegantes include Jhostynxon García, Carlos Rodríguez, and Renato Núñez.

Like A Good Gleyber, Torres Is There - Gleyber Torres is in Caracas and has visited the Leones, with whom he hopes to play this winter provided he can get a new MLB contract secured before Dec. 1.

Torres, 29, went 4-for-19 for Venezuela at the 2026 World Baseball Classic and appeared in 98 games with the Detroit Tigers this season, batting .260/.364/.363 with eight homers and 38 RBIs in 420 plate appearances. In 1,129 MLB games with the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers, Torres has a .263/.340/.427 line with 162 homers and 553 RBIs.

He made his LVBP debut with Caracas in the 2022-23 season, going 13-for-45 with a homer and eight RBIs in 11 games.
