Suspended indefinitely by the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol after punching Acereros de Monclova third baseman Rodolfo Amador to the turf during the fourth inning of Sunday’s game, Toros de Tijuana outfielder Danry Vasquez is penitent.

In a one-minute video posted to his Instagram account, Vasquez apologized profusely for the incident, which happened in the fourth inning of Sunday’s 5-3 Monclova win at Tijuana. The Toros had runners on first and third with no outs and Jonathan Guzman at the plate. With Vasquez on third, Guzman hit into a fielder’s choice at the hot corner, and Amador fielded the ball cleanly. He threw to Monclova catcher Jose Felix, who sent the ball back to Amador. The third baseman forced Vasquez out of the basepath and then tagged him for the first out of the inning.

After being tagged out by Amador, Vasquez punched the Monclova third baseman, first with a left and then a right, knocking him to the ground, and then kicked at Amador while he was on the turf.

“I would like to offer my sincerest apologies for what happened this Sunday during the game between the Toros de Tijuana and the Acereros de Monclova. I want to apologize in advance—and express my regret regarding the incident involving the Acereros de Monclova—to my teammates on the Toros de Tijuana, the Liga Mexicana, the Toros fanbase, and baseball fans across the Mexican League in general,” Vasquez said in the post. “What I did was wrong; I reacted to an action I perceived as a provocation, and I take full responsibility for my conduct. I am here to face the consequences, acknowledge my mistake, and learn from it. I regret everything that happened, and I assure you that I am working on myself so that something like this does not happen again.”

Vasquez was suspended indefinitely as part of a series of fines and suspensions handed down by the league over the brawl.

“I accept the consequences of my actions; I love this sport—I love baseball—and I owe a great deal to the sport in general. I am truly grateful to the Liga Mexicana for all the opportunities they have given me, and—well, with nothing more to say—I hope you accept my admission of fault. Thank you very much, from the bottom of my heart,” Vasquez’ statement concluded.

The Toros have won the Zona Norte title in the regular season and will open the LMB Playoffs on Aug. 9 against the Algodoneros de Union Laguna at home.
